What Is MAP Pricing?

Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) is a pricing policy set by manufacturers and brands that establishes the lowest price at which retailers and resellers are permitted to advertise a product. MAP policies are not the same as minimum selling prices — a retailer can technically sell below MAP in private (such as in-cart pricing or after a customer inquiry), but they cannot publicly advertise a price lower than the MAP threshold. This distinction matters because MAP enforcement is about protecting how your brand appears in the market, not about controlling the final transaction price.

MAP policies exist for a critical reason: to preserve brand equity and protect the entire distribution channel. When a single unauthorized reseller or aggressive discounter advertises your product at a steep discount, it triggers a cascade of problems. Other authorized dealers feel compelled to match the lower price to remain competitive, which compresses margins across the board. Consumers begin to associate your brand with discount pricing rather than premium value. And eventually, your best retail partners — the ones who invest in showrooms, product education, and customer service — can no longer justify carrying your products because the margin has eroded to the point where the economics no longer work.

The challenge for brands is scale. If you have 20 authorized resellers and another 30 unauthorized sellers listing your products on Amazon, eBay, Google Shopping, and their own websites, that is potentially hundreds of product listings to monitor across dozens of domains. Checking these manually is not feasible for any brand selling at scale. This is exactly why MAP monitoring software exists: to automate the detection of violations so your team can focus on enforcement rather than discovery.

Price Patrol serves as your automated MAP monitoring system. By continuously tracking advertised prices across your reseller network, the software identifies the moment a retailer drops below your MAP threshold. You receive instant alerts with evidence — the offending URL, the advertised price, and a timestamp — giving you everything you need to contact the violator and request compliance. Over time, the historical data reveals patterns: which resellers violate most frequently, which products are most commonly discounted below MAP, and whether your enforcement efforts are actually working.

What MAP Violations Look Like

MAP violations take many forms. Here are the most common patterns brands encounter.

Direct Price Undercuts

A reseller lists your product at a price visibly below MAP on their product page, Google Shopping listing, or marketplace storefront.

Coupon & Promo Stacking

Retailers technically list at MAP but offer site-wide coupons, loyalty discounts, or bundle deals that bring the effective advertised price below MAP.

Marketplace Erosion

Unauthorized third-party sellers on Amazon, eBay, or Walmart Marketplace list your products well below MAP, often sourced from gray market channels.

Google Shopping Violations

Your products appear in Google Shopping results at below-MAP prices, visible to every potential customer before they even visit the retailer site.

New Unauthorized Sellers

Sellers you have never authorized begin listing your products at aggressive prices, undermining your authorized channel.

Gradual Price Drift

Resellers slowly lower prices over weeks, testing your monitoring. Without automated tracking, these incremental drops go unnoticed until damage is done.

How to Detect MAP Violations Automatically

1

Set Your MAP Prices

Define MAP thresholds for each product in your catalog. Price Patrol uses your Shopify product prices as the baseline, or you can set custom MAP values per product.

2

Add Reseller URLs

Paste the URLs of reseller product pages you want to monitor. Add authorized dealers, marketplace listings, and any unauthorized sellers you discover.

3

Get Violation Alerts

Price Patrol checks reseller prices automatically and alerts you the moment a price drops below your MAP threshold. You get the URL, price, and timestamp as evidence.

Why Automate MAP Monitoring?

Instant Violation Alerts

Get notified within hours of a MAP violation occurring, not days or weeks later. The faster you detect violations, the faster you can enforce compliance.

Historical Evidence

Every price reading is logged with timestamps. Build a documented history of violations for enforcement conversations and, if necessary, legal action.

Protect Brand Value

Consistent MAP enforcement maintains the perceived value of your brand. Consumers trust brands that maintain stable, fair pricing across all channels.

Support Authorized Dealers

Your best retail partners invest in marketing, showrooms, and customer education. MAP enforcement ensures they can maintain healthy margins and continue investing in your brand.
